In Loving Memory of Representative Hoa Nguyen

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Representative Hoa Nguyen, taken far too soon after a fierce and courageous journey with cancer.

Hoa was a dear friend and partner to East County Rising. Her life and leadership reflected the very best of what it means to serve community—with heart, humility, and hope. From her early years as a youth organizer to her service on the David Douglas School Board and in the Oregon Legislature, Hoa lived her values every day. She believed in the power of education, the dignity of work, and the promise of collective care.

We were proud to encourage and support her runs for office, and she became a strong and steadfast advocate for our East Portland and North Clackamas communities. Whether fighting for schools, affordable housing, or working families, Hoa led with courage and compassion.

Born in New Orleans and rooted in East Portland, Hoa carried both places in her heart. Her story—of resilience, faith, and dedication to others—inspired so many of us. She built bridges where there were divides, lifted up families facing hardship, and always centered those who too often go unseen.

We know how many in the East County Rising family surrounded Hoa with love in her final months—visiting her, walking her beloved dog Pepper, and supporting her and her loved ones in countless quiet ways. That outpouring of care is a testament to the deep relationships she nurtured and the community she helped to build.

To Hoa’s beloved family, close friends, and the wide circle who rallied around her in love: we hold you in our hearts. Thank you for sharing her with us.

Hoa’s light will continue to shine in the students she championed, the policies she shaped, and the communities she helped strengthen. We will miss her terribly—and honor her by continuing the work she began, with the same compassion and courage she embodied.

May her memory be a blessing, and may her spirit live on in all who dare to build a more just and loving Oregon.
